I (Jess) started Flo and Mil to honour the memory of my great aunties, Florence and Mildred, who lived together into their 90s in a small cottage in Ambleside, England.
Places, the people who live in them and those who come and go hold special memories and stories just like Florence and Mildred. Flo and Mil is all about capturing these memories on paper; the gate that always squeaks and the kids run to the front door to see who has arrived or the mandarin tree that reminds you of basking in the afternoon sun on the front verandah eating freshly picked fruit.
How It All Started
During lockdown, people were spending more time than ever in their homes. I challenged myself to draw one house a day from our Newcastle street during this time. What started out as a challenge grew into so much more, I was able to connect with my community, talk to my neighbours over the fence and share stories and memories that went much deeper than the houses themselves. Read more here in this article from the ABC.
I have a background in architecture and I have always loved drawing especially houses, but it’s the memories attached to ones home, so special and personal that I love.
I do draw more than houses, see my instagram page for examples. My illustrations have been used for wedding invitations and stationary, on stubby holders, business branding, websites and marketing. Get in contact if you have something special in mind.
